In the United States, public health guidelines, pharmacokinetic models, and legal research standard drink measures do not refer to a generic cup, glass, or can. A standard drink is defined strictly by the mass of pure ethanol it contains: exactly 14.0 grams (0.6 fluid ounces).

In real-world social settings, commercial pours frequently deviate substantially from standard definitions:

Why Drink Counting Without Ethanol Mass Fails
